Meet the Expert: Robert Hyers, PhD

Robert Hyers

Dr. Robert Hyers is the George I. Alden professor and head of the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He holds an SB in materials science and engineering and a PhD in materials engineering, both from MIT.

Dr. Hyers works at the intersection between computers and the physical world, with a particular interest in high-temperature materials and their processing systems. His recent work includes model-based experiments on the International Space Station including magnetohydrodynamic effects on nucleation and solidification, novel methods for measurement of properties of matter at high temperatures, and a novel approach to thermal management in spacecraft propulsion.

Dr. Hyers also has extensive experience in startups, entrepreneurship, and innovation. In addition to leading a privately funded industrial startup, he co-founded an educational program in entrepreneurship and innovation that grew to over 200 students per semester.

Dr. Hyers: Massachusetts has a great concentration of opportunities in engineering. That includes top engineering schools like MIT and WPI, and the research activities that are done there. We also have a large concentration of industrial jobs in aerospace, defense, energy, computing, biotech, and more. Massachusetts also has a strong startup culture, particularly in engineering-based companies. These strengths combine to provide even more opportunities.

Dr. Hyers: Make friends and connections. One great secret is that your friends get older, too. They will build their own careers. The person down the hall today may be a customer, supplier, boss, employee, or mentor someday. Even shallow connections help you learn how to ask better questions. Those shallow connections deepen when you do something together.

Part of this is to participate in your professional societies, even as a new undergraduate. You will make connections with people who have already self-selected for seeking connections. Professional societies have been very important in my own career, and I strongly encourage the students in my research group to participate. You will learn something from the presentations, but more from the casual conversation over dinner. Then, if you keep showing up, you will be included in the process of planning and see how the decisions are made.

Dr. Hyers: The future of engineering is bright. New and emerging tools will not replace engineering, but accelerate it. Emerging technologies in manufacturing and materials engineering mean that the parts and machines we design and produce in the future will be different. These new technologies enable new geometries, new properties, and new capabilities. Engineers will need help to manage these new degrees of freedom. AI, and computers in general, are a critical part of managing the newly available complexity.

In the end, engineers will still be needed to identify the problems to be solved and to guide the development and deployment of the solutions.

Online Engineering Programs – What to Consider

The lure of a lucrative salary and relative job security into the future attract many people to the field of engineering. Prior to enrolling in an online program, however, aspiring engineers are strongly advised to ask the following questions about their schools of interest:

  • Can the distance-based engineering program be completed on a part-time basis?
  • How long does the online program generally take? Can students take breaks and resume studying later on?
  • Does the school provide job placement services after graduation or other student support services?

Accreditation
